I *REALLY* *REALLY* hate so-called 'web developers' who write for Windows. Typically, the latest site to fuck me off is written in ASP. The site even says "Best viewed in Internet Explorer 6.0", so I'm left with a half-working site, unless I connect to a terminal services box on the other side of fucking London. I mean, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, it is NOT THAT HARD to create a fully-functioning site that works in ANY browser. As an example, I recently redid my site. As far as my testing so far has gone, it works fine in pretty much any browser. I've tried it in Firefox, IE5/5.5/6, even lynx/elinks, and it works exactly as I intended it to in all of them, with minimal effort. I know it's been said a thousand times before, but designing sites for one specific browser is JUST PLAIN FUCKING RUDE! Not only that, it's lazy. *sigh*. Well, lister (desktop #2, part-time server) decided that it didn't want to work anymore. Well, to be more precise, the hard drive is pretty much dead. It works, just incredibly fucking slowly. It is an old drive though, so I guess it can be forgiven. It's annoying though. I had all my development websites/databases on there, and the version of PgSQL on Debian Woody is too old to import the data :( I'm increasingly getting annoyed with Linux, though, and moving more towards the BSDs. I just moved over to an OpenBSD bridging firewall, and fenix (main desktop) is running FreeBSD most of the time now. I'm pondering (when I can get a new drive for lister) reinstalling slash, and whacking FreeBSD on it. I like Debian, it's a good solid OS, but the packages are just too out of date for what I want. Plus there's the whole thing of BSD being far more integrated and functional than the Linuxes. It just makes more sense! Linux is so slap-dash in the way it's put together. A kernel made by one guy, utilities from this guy, other bits from that guy.. Just read this rant by Matt Fuller to see what I mean :) The other alternative I guess, is to leave slash as-is, and just make lister a full server when I (eventually) get a new drive; it was mostly a desktop before, but doing vague servery bits, mostly being a testbed server for PHP/PgSQL projects, as it was running Debian Sid (dual-booting with FreeBSD) and had the newer packages (no, I'm not going to run the unstable dist on my server :P) Current Mood: bored Current Music: The Offspring - Damnit I Changed Again
